How to Show Up in Google AI Overviews

Updated August 2026

Google AI Overviews can show a generated summary and supporting links for some queries. The response and links shown can vary, and an Overview does not trigger for every search.

Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews beyond Search eligibility and its existing SEO guidance. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or inclusion.

What AI Overviews actually are

An AI Overview is a synthesized answer that can include supporting links. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Meet Google Search requirements first

Google states that its existing Search technical requirements and SEO best practices remain relevant. It does not publish a guaranteed formula for selection as an AI Overview source.

  • Build topical authority across a cluster of related pages, not one thin post.
  • Cover search intent fully so the page genuinely answers the question.
  • Keep technical health strong: indexable, fast, mobile-friendly, well-structured.
  • Earn the links and mentions that establish the page as trustworthy.

Make the answer easy to summarize

Clear structure and accurate text are sensible reader and crawlability practices. Google does not describe them as a guarantee of AI Overview inclusion.

  • Lead sections with a direct, concise answer, then add detail.
  • Use descriptive headings, lists, and tables for scannable structure.
  • Add FAQ and Article schema where it genuinely fits the content.
  • Keep facts current and accurate so the summarized version reflects well on you.

Track your presence over time

Treat any observed Overview as a dated result. Google now reports generative AI performance through Search Console, while a separate assistant sample can record other answer surfaces. SiteAuditorPro keeps those observations separate from its technical and on-page checks.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says there are no additional requirements or special schema needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, but eligibility and best practices do not guarantee inclusion.

Why did my traffic change when AI Overviews appeared?

Do not infer the cause from timing alone. Review the dedicated generative AI and overall Search performance data in Search Console, then compare impressions, clicks, landing pages, and conversions over the same period.
